Bank transfers do not all go through on weekends. Same-bank transfers between your own accounts post immediately any day of the week, and Zelle, FedNow, and RTP payments can move in seconds around the clock. But ACH transfers and wire transfers rely on Federal Reserve settlement systems that only run Monday through Friday, so a payment you send Saturday morning generally won’t begin processing until Monday.
What Actually Moves on a Saturday or Sunday
A handful of transfer types complete on weekends because they don’t depend on the Federal Reserve’s weekday settlement windows.
Moving money between two accounts you hold at the same bank is the simplest case. The bank updates its own ledger, no outside network is involved, and the funds are available immediately regardless of the day or time.1Bank of America. Cutoff Times for Deposits, Transfers and Payments The transaction date in your history may display the next business day, but you can spend or withdraw the money right away.
Zelle, which is built into many bank apps, typically delivers funds to an enrolled recipient within minutes any day of the week. Because Zelle routes through the banking system rather than parking money in a separate wallet, the amount lands directly in the recipient’s bank account. If the recipient isn’t already enrolled, expect one to three business days after they sign up.
Two newer interbank networks run continuously: the RTP network operated by The Clearing House and the FedNow Service operated by the Federal Reserve. Both process payments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, including weekends and federal holidays.2Federal Reserve Bank Services. The catch is adoption. As of late 2025, roughly 1,500 financial institutions participate in FedNow, out of more than 9,000 banks and credit unions in the United States.5Federal Reserve Financial Services. ACH Transfers Wait for Monday
The Automated Clearing House network handles most routine electronic payments between different banks: direct deposits, bill payments, and standard bank-to-bank transfers. ACH payments travel in batches and settle through a Federal Reserve service that is closed on weekends and federal holidays.6Nacha. The ABCs of ACH
An ACH transfer you kick off Friday evening won’t begin processing until Monday. If Monday is a federal holiday, it slips to Tuesday. About 80 percent of ACH payments settle within one banking day or less once processing starts.7Nacha. How ACH Payments Work
Same-Day ACH doesn’t rescue weekend transfers either. It settles qualifying payments of up to $1 million on the business day they’re submitted, with a final Federal Reserve cutoff at 4:45 p.m. ET.8Federal Reserve Financial Services. Same Day ACH Frequently Asked Questions9Nacha. Increasing the Same Day ACH Dollar Limit It only runs on business days, so a Saturday submission still waits for the first Monday window. Payments above $1 million aren’t rejected; they roll to next-day settlement.
Wire Transfers on Weekends
Domestic wires travel through the Fedwire Funds Service, which currently runs from 9:00 p.m. ET to 7:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, excluding Federal Reserve holidays.10Federal Reserve Board. Expansion of Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours Fedwire does not operate on weekends. Any domestic wire you request Saturday or Sunday sits until Monday.
Even during the week, each bank sets its own cutoff for outgoing wires. Wells Fargo, for example, cuts off domestic wires at 3:00 p.m. PT and international wires at 2:20 p.m. PT.11Wells Fargo. Digital Wires FAQs Miss the cutoff and the wire goes out the next business day. Domestic wire fees typically run $25 to $30 for outgoing transfers, with international wires often $45 or more.12Bank of America. Send Wire Transfers in Online Banking or Our Mobile Banking App
One thing to know before you send: once the sending bank releases a wire, the payment is final. Unlike ACH, a completed wire generally cannot be reversed, so verify account details carefully.
International wires add more delay. They typically travel through the SWIFT messaging network, may pass through one or more intermediary banks, and can take one to five business days to arrive depending on the destination country, currency, and number of intermediaries.12Bank of America. Send Wire Transfers in Online Banking or Our Mobile Banking App Weekend schedules also vary globally; in several Middle Eastern countries the weekend falls on Friday and Saturday. If timing matters, initiate international wires early in the week and well before the daily cutoff.
Venmo and Cash App
Standard transfers from Venmo or Cash App to a linked bank account are free but ride the ACH rails, which means one to three business days and no weekend movement. Both apps sell an instant option that routes the payout to your linked debit card instead, bypassing the ACH timeline and delivering funds within minutes any day of the week:
- Venmo instant transfer: 1.75% of the amount, minimum $0.25, maximum $25.
- Cash App instant transfer: 0.5% to 2.5% of the amount, minimum $0.25 to $1, maximum $75.13Cash App. Withdrawal Transfer Speed Options
When a Due Date Falls on a Weekend
Weekend banking delays create a real problem when a payment deadline lands on Saturday or Sunday. A few rules cushion this.
For federal taxes, the IRS treats a deadline that falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday as due on the next business day, for both filing and tax deposits.14Internal Revenue Service. Employment Tax Due Dates
For credit card and mortgage payments, Regulation Z prevents creditors from treating a mailed payment as late when they don’t accept payments on the due date. If your due date falls on a weekend and mailed payments can’t be received or accepted, a payment arriving the next business day generally cannot be marked late.15Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation Z – 1026.10 Payments This protection is specific to mailed payments. If the creditor accepts online or phone payments on the due date, it doesn’t have to extend the same grace period, so paying online Monday when the due date was Sunday can still count as late.
Payroll usually cuts the other way. When a payday falls on a weekend or holiday, employers typically deposit pay on the preceding Friday rather than the following Monday.6Nacha. The ABCs of ACH
Why the Weekend Gap Exists
The reason for all this comes down to one schedule. Federal banking regulations define a business day as any calendar day other than a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday.16eCFR. 12 CFR 229.2 – Definitions (Regulation CC) Fedwire and the ACH settlement windows both follow that calendar, so interbank transfers that depend on them can’t complete until the next business day.
That is changing. FedNow already runs continuously, and the Federal Reserve has proposed expanding Fedwire to 22 hours a day, six days a week, though that expansion isn’t expected until 2028 or 2029.10Federal Reserve Board. Expansion of Fedwire Funds Service and National Settlement Service Operating Hours For now, if you need money to move on a weekend, the working options are a same-bank transfer, Zelle, an instant transfer from a payment app to a debit card, or a FedNow or RTP payment between two banks that both participate. Anything routed through ACH or Fedwire will wait for Monday.
