Can You Track a Check in the Mail or at Your Bank?

To track a check, use two tools in parallel: your bank’s online portal or mobile app to see whether the check has cleared your account, and a trackable mail service (Certified Mail, Registered Mail, FedEx, or UPS) to follow the physical envelope. If you’re waiting to receive a check rather than send one, USPS Informed Delivery previews incoming letter mail before it lands in your box.

Information to Gather First

Before you call your bank or open a tracking page, pull together the details any search will ask for:

  • The check number, printed in the upper-right corner and along the bottom.
  • The exact dollar amount.
  • The date you wrote the check.
  • The payee’s name.
  • The tracking number from your mailing receipt, if you used a trackable service.

For a money order, you need the receipt stub you got at purchase. It carries the serial number, the post office number, and the dollar amount, and all three are required to look up the status.1USPS. Money Orders Without that stub, the postal service has no practical way to find your transaction.

Checking Whether a Check Has Cleared Your Bank

Log in to your bank’s online portal or app and open your checking account’s transaction history. Search by check number, date range, or dollar amount.2U.S. Bank. How Do I See My Transaction Details and History? A debit that matches the check number and amount means the recipient deposited it and the funds have left your account.

Most banks also display images of the front and back of each cashed check. The front shows the payee and amount; the back shows the endorsement signature and the depositing bank’s stamp. That image is your record that payment went through. If your bank doesn’t show images by default, ask customer service or a branch for copies.

If nothing shows up after a few weeks, do two things. Call the payee to confirm whether they received and deposited it. Then consider a stop-payment order, which tells your bank to refuse the check if it’s ever presented. Stop-payment fees commonly run up to $35, and the order typically stays in effect for six to twenty-four months.3U.S. Bank. How Much Does a Stop Payment on a Paper Check Cost?

How Long a Check Should Take to Clear

Knowing the normal timelines tells you when “still pending” is routine and when it’s a problem. Federal Reserve Regulation CC sets the outer limits on how long a bank can hold deposited check funds:

  • Next business day for cashier’s checks, government checks, and the first $225 of most other checks.
  • Two business days for most standard personal and business checks.4Federal Reserve. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance
  • Up to seven business days when the bank places an exception hold, such as on deposits over $5,525, checks it reasonably suspects are uncollectible, or accounts less than 30 days old.4Federal Reserve. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance

Business days run Monday through Friday, excluding federal holidays. A check deposited late Friday won’t start the clock until Monday. If you’re looking at a check that shows “pending” two days after deposit, that’s normal processing.

Tracking a Check in the Mail

A regular stamped envelope has no tracking. To follow a check through the postal system, you have to use a trackable service when you send it.

USPS Certified Mail

Certified Mail is the standard option for an important letter. You get a tracking number, electronic delivery confirmation, and proof of mailing. Enter the tracking number at usps.com to see status updates as the envelope moves through distribution centers.5USPS. Certified Mail – The Basics The service costs $5.30 on top of regular postage.6USPS. Notice 123 – Price List

If you also want confirmation of who signed for it, add a Return Receipt. The paper green card costs $4.40; the electronic version, which emails you an image of the recipient’s signature, costs $2.82.6USPS. Notice 123 – Price List

USPS Registered Mail

Registered Mail is the most secure option USPS offers. Each postal worker who handles the envelope signs for it, and the item is kept under lock at every stage. Registered Mail also includes insurance for the declared value of the contents.

Fees start at $19.70 for items with no declared value and scale with the amount insured; a check insured up to $500 costs $23.50, and coverage up to $5,000 costs $38.00.6USPS. Notice 123 – Price List Delivery may take an extra day or two. For a routine personal check, Certified Mail with a Return Receipt is enough. Reserve Registered Mail for cashier’s checks or payments worth several thousand dollars.

FedEx, UPS, and Other Private Carriers

Private carriers give you real-time tracking dashboards and delivery confirmation similar to USPS. Rates for letter-sized mail are usually higher, but delivery can be faster and the tracking granularity is often better.

Watching for a Check You’re Expecting

You can’t see inside an envelope, but you can usually spot a check by the sender’s return address. Previews are taken automatically as mail passes through sorting machines and typically arrive the morning of delivery or the day before. If you see a check-sized envelope in your preview that never lands in your box, that’s your cue to contact the sender or file with USPS.

If the Check Doesn’t Turn Up

Act quickly. The longer a missing check sits out there, the harder any recovery gets.

Stop Payment and Replacement

The sender should place a stop-payment order on the missing check to keep anyone from cashing it, then issue a replacement. The recipient should watch their statements for unauthorized deposits that might mean the check was intercepted and altered.

Missing Mail Search

If you sent the check with tracking and it has stalled, check the tracking status at usps.com. If the mail still hasn’t arrived seven business days after you reported the issue, submit a Missing Mail search on the USPS website.9USPS. Find Missing Mail You’ll need the sender and recipient addresses, the envelope type, the tracking number or receipt date, and a description of the contents.

If You Suspect Fraud

File a report with your local police, then report identity theft to the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov or 1-877-438-4338. Contact Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion to place a fraud alert; the bureau you contact is required to notify the other two.

Deadlines for Reporting to Your Bank

The Uniform Commercial Code puts a duty on you to review statements promptly and report unauthorized check activity. If you don’t report a forged or altered check within a reasonable time, generally no more than 30 days after the statement becomes available, you may lose the right to hold the bank responsible for later forged checks from the same source. There is also an absolute one-year cutoff: if you don’t discover and report a forged signature or alteration within one year of receiving the statement, you’re generally barred from any claim against the bank.10Cornell Law School. Money Orders Work Differently

Money orders are prepaid, so the tracking method isn’t the same as a personal check. To check whether a USPS money order has been cashed, go to tools.usps.com and enter the serial number, post office number, and issued amount from your receipt.11United States Postal Service. Money Order Status Check You can also call 1-866-974-2733.12USPS. Money Orders – The Basics

If a money order is lost or stolen, take the original purchase receipt to any post office and file PS Form 6401. There’s a processing fee. Confirming the loss can take up to 30 days, and the full investigation can take up to 60 days. If USPS confirms the money order wasn’t cashed, you’ll receive a replacement.12USPS. Money Orders – The Basics No claim for improper payment is permitted more than one year after the money order was paid.

Cashier’s Checks Are Harder to Replace

Cashier’s checks are drawn on the bank’s own funds, so the bank carries the risk if it issues a replacement while the original is still out there. Contact the issuing bank right away with the check number, amount, payee name, and issue date. The bank will typically require a declaration of loss, a signed statement that you lost the check and didn’t transfer it. The claim generally becomes enforceable 90 days after the check’s date, so the bank may not issue a replacement before that window closes.

Many banks also require an indemnity bond for the full amount of the check, essentially an insurance policy protecting the bank if the original surfaces and gets cashed by someone else. You carry that risk, not the bank. Even with the bond, expect a wait of 30 to 90 days before the replacement is issued.13Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Why Do I Need an Indemnity Bond to Replace a Lost Cashier’s Check? Given the friction, sending a cashier’s check by Registered Mail is worth the extra cost.

When a Check Has Gone Stale

If you mailed a personal check months ago and it still hasn’t cleared, it may have gone stale. Under the UCC, a bank isn’t obligated to honor a check presented more than six months after the date on it, though the bank may still choose to pay it in good faith.14Cornell Law School. UCC Law – 4-404 Bank Not Obliged to Pay Check More Than Six Months After Its Date A stale check sits in a gray zone: it might clear, it might be rejected.

Call the payee. If they still need payment, place a stop payment on the original and write a new one. If they don’t, the stop payment keeps anyone from cashing it later. Don’t assume a stale check is automatically void; until you place a stop payment, the bank could still process it.
