You can refinance Sallie Mae loans, but only by taking out a new loan with a different lender, because Sallie Mae does not offer a refinancing product for its own debt.1Sallie Mae. Consolidating and Refinancing Student Loans The new lender pays off your Sallie Mae balance directly, and from that point on you make payments to the new lender under a new interest rate and repayment term.
Because Sallie Mae loans are private, they are not eligible for federal Direct Consolidation, which is limited to federal student loans.2Federal Student Aid. Student Loan Consolidation Private refinancing is the only way to restructure this debt.
How the Refinance Actually Works
After you apply and get approved with an outside lender (a bank, credit union, or online lender), that lender sends a payoff payment straight to Sallie Mae. Once Sallie Mae receives the funds and applies them, your original account is satisfied and you owe only the new lender.
The new loan comes with its own contract spelling out the interest rate, monthly payment, and repayment term. You can choose a fixed rate that stays the same for the life of the loan or a variable rate tied to a market benchmark like the Secured Overnight Financing Rate. Many lenders knock about 0.25 percentage points off the rate if you enroll in autopay.
Sallie Mae does not charge prepayment penalties, so paying off the balance early through a refinance will not trigger any extra fees from them.
What You Give Up When You Refinance
Sallie Mae offers several protections on its private loans that the new lender may or may not match. Once the Sallie Mae balance is paid off, those protections are gone unless the new lender provides equivalents. Check the new loan’s terms before you sign.
- Deferment. Sallie Mae lets borrowers postpone payments if they go back to school at least half-time (up to 48 months) or enter an internship, residency, or fellowship (up to 60 months for undergraduate loans). Interest still accrues, but payments are not required.3Sallie Mae. Student Loan Deferment – Postpone Your Student Loan Payments
- Death or disability discharge. Sallie Mae may waive the remaining balance if the borrower dies or becomes permanently and totally disabled. Not every private lender does this, and some will go after a co-signer for the balance instead.4Sallie Mae. Life Changes – How to Continue Managing Your Student Loans
- Co-signer release. Sallie Mae allows the primary borrower to apply to remove a co-signer after 12 consecutive on-time principal-and-interest payments, subject to a credit review at that time. A new lender may require more payments, apply stricter credit standards, or not offer release at all.5Sallie Mae. Terms
Whether You’ll Qualify
Every lender writes its own rules, but the same handful of factors show up almost everywhere.
- Credit score. A minimum in the mid-to-upper 600s is common, with 680 a frequent floor. The lowest advertised rates typically go to scores above 740.
- Debt-to-income ratio. Lenders want your total monthly debt payments, including the refinanced loan, to stay within a manageable share of gross income. Below roughly 50 percent is a common benchmark, and stricter lenders set it lower.
- Steady income. Consistent employment history, usually at least two years, signals you can keep paying. Self-employed applicants can qualify but should expect extra documentation.
- Degree completion. Many lenders require a completed degree from a school that participates in federal financial aid programs. Some will consider borrowers who did not finish, but the options narrow.
- Current standing. Loans in default or seriously past due will generally disqualify you.
If your own profile falls short, adding a co-signer can help you qualify or unlock a lower rate. The co-signer is equally responsible for repayment, and any missed payment can show up on both credit reports.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Co-signer for a Student Loan
Documents to Have Ready
Most lenders let you upload everything through an online portal. Gather these before you start:
- Sallie Mae account numbers and a current payoff amount for each loan. The payoff figure is not the same as your statement balance because it includes interest accruing daily up to the expected payment date. You can request a payoff quote through your Sallie Mae online account or by phone.
- Proof of income. Employees typically submit recent pay stubs covering the last 30 days plus the most recent W-2. Self-employed borrowers usually provide federal tax returns or 1099 forms.
- Government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license, state ID, or U.S. passport. Some lenders also want proof of citizenship or permanent residency.
- A recent Sallie Mae statement so the new lender can verify loan types, balances, and current rates.
Check every number twice. A single wrong digit in an account number or payoff amount can push the process back by days or weeks.
Comparing Rates Without Wrecking Your Score
Most refinancing lenders let you prequalify online through a soft credit inquiry, which does not affect your score. Get soft-pull quotes from several lenders before formally applying anywhere.
When you’re ready to apply for real, submit those applications within a short window. Major credit scoring models generally treat multiple hard inquiries for the same type of loan as a single event when they fall inside a 14-day window, which limits the score impact to roughly what one application would cause.
After approval, the lender must give you a written disclosure showing the interest rate, total cost of the loan, and annual percentage rate. Federal regulations require this disclosure for every private education loan, and no money can move to Sallie Mae until you’ve received it.7eCFR. 12 CFR 1026.46 Special Disclosure Requirements for Private Education Loans Compare those disclosed terms against your current Sallie Mae rates to confirm the refinance actually saves money over the life of the loan.
The Payoff Process and Your Right to Cancel
After the final disclosures arrive, you have three business days to cancel the new loan with no penalty. During that window, the lender cannot send any funds to Sallie Mae.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation 1026.48 Limitations on Private Education Loans If the disclosures are mailed instead of delivered electronically, the clock starts three business days after mailing, which is when you’re presumed to have received them.
Once the cancellation period passes, the new lender wires a payoff to Sallie Mae covering principal plus interest accrued through the arrival date. Posting can take several business days. A paid-in-full confirmation letter usually follows later.
Keep making your regular Sallie Mae payments until you have confirmation the account is closed. If a scheduled payment crosses paths with the payoff and creates an overpayment, Sallie Mae will refund the difference. Stopping payments too early can produce a late mark that damages your credit.
The Student Loan Interest Deduction Still Applies
Refinancing does not cost you the federal student loan interest deduction. Under 26 U.S.C. ยง 221, a qualified education loan explicitly includes debt used to refinance an existing qualified student loan.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 221 – Interest on Education Loans As long as the original Sallie Mae loan was taken out solely for qualified higher education expenses, interest on the new loan stays deductible.
The maximum deduction is $2,500 per year and phases out at higher incomes. For the 2025 tax year, the phaseout begins at a modified adjusted gross income of $85,000 for single filers and $170,000 for joint filers, and the deduction disappears entirely at $100,000 and $200,000 respectively.10Internal Revenue Service. Publication 970 – Tax Benefits for Education These thresholds are adjusted for inflation each year. You cannot claim the deduction if you file as married filing separately or if someone else claims you as a dependent.
One important limit: if you refinance for more than the outstanding balance and use the extra cash for anything other than qualified education expenses, you lose the deduction on that loan entirely.10Internal Revenue Service. Publication 970 – Tax Benefits for Education If the refinance moves your loan from Sallie Mae to a new servicer mid-year, expect a Form 1098-E from each lender covering its portion of the year, and add both amounts together when you claim the deduction.
