You can cash a check on Sunday at Walmart and many grocery store service desks, through smartphone apps like Ingo Money and PayPal, or by depositing it into your own bank account through a mobile app or ATM. Retail stores and apps put money in your hands or your digital wallet the same day, usually for a fee. A bank deposit is free but won’t officially start clearing until Monday, because under federal banking rules Sunday isn’t a business day.1eCFR. 12 CFR 229.2 – Definitions
Retail Stores Open on Sunday
Walmart is the most widely available option. Its check-cashing limit is $5,000 for most of the year and rises to $7,500 between January and April. Fees cap at $4 for checks up to $1,000 and $8 for checks above that. Two-party personal checks are limited to $200 with a maximum $6 fee.2Walmart. Check Cashing Even if a store’s MoneyCenter is closed on a Sunday, the Customer Service desk usually handles check cashing during regular store hours.
Grocery chains with money service counters also cash checks on Sunday, though those counters often close earlier than the store itself. Dedicated check-cashing storefronts accept a wider range of check types, but Sunday hours vary by location, so call ahead.
Most retail locations prioritize lower-risk checks: payroll, government benefits, tax refunds, and cashier’s checks. Personal checks are frequently turned away because the store can’t verify the writer’s account balance in real time.
Check-Cashing Apps
If you don’t need physical cash, smartphone apps work around the clock, including Sunday. You photograph the front and back of the check, and approval usually takes a few minutes.
Ingo Money charges 2% for payroll and government checks with a pre-printed signature and 5% for other check types, with a $5 minimum. Approved funds land in your linked account, prepaid card, or digital balance in minutes in most cases. A no-fee option is available if you’re willing to wait 10 days for the check to clear.3Ingo Money App. Ingo Money App Benefits and Fees FAQ
PayPal’s Cash a Check feature is similar. The fee is 1% for pre-printed payroll and government checks (minimum $5) and 5% for other types (minimum $5). PayPal also offers the same 10-day free option.4PayPal US. Cash Check – Cash a Check Online and Mobile Deposit
Neither app hands you cash. Funds go to a digital account, and you’d need to withdraw from an ATM or linked debit card if you want bills.
Mobile Deposit Through Your Bank
If you have a bank account, the bank’s mobile app almost certainly lets you deposit a check on Sunday. Log in, open the deposit section, choose the receiving account, and enter the exact amount. Photograph both sides of the check against a dark, flat surface. Blurry images are the most common reason mobile deposits get rejected.
Most banks require you to write “For Mobile Deposit Only” on the back beneath your signature. No federal rule mandates that exact phrasing, but Regulation CC uses it as an example of a restrictive endorsement and banks enforce it as policy. Skip it and your deposit may be kicked back.
The catch: unlike the paid apps above, a bank mobile deposit follows the standard federal availability rules. Sunday isn’t a business day, so your deposit is treated as received Monday morning.1eCFR. 12 CFR 229.2 – Definitions Banks also set daily dollar limits on mobile deposits, and going above the cap can trigger longer holds.
ATM Deposits
ATMs at your bank or a network partner accept check deposits on Sundays. Insert your card, enter your PIN, choose deposit, and feed the check into the scanner. The machine reads the amount and asks you to confirm before finalizing.
Sunday ATM deposits are also treated as received on Monday. Federal rules also allow banks to set ATM cutoffs as early as noon, so a Sunday deposit that lands after the posted cutoff can be treated as received Tuesday instead.5eCFR. 12 CFR 229.19 – Miscellaneous Keep the receipt, and hang onto the physical check until the deposit clears.
What Sunday Check Cashing Costs
- Walmart: up to $4 for checks of $1,000 or less; up to $8 for checks over $1,000; up to $6 for two-party personal checks up to $200.2Walmart. Check Cashing
- Ingo Money: 2% for pre-printed payroll and government checks, 5% for others, $5 minimum. Free with a 10-day wait.3Ingo Money App. Ingo Money App Benefits and Fees FAQ
- PayPal: 1% for pre-printed payroll and government checks, 5% for others, $5 minimum. Free with a 10-day wait.4PayPal US. Cash Check – Cash a Check Online and Mobile Deposit
- Dedicated check-cashing stores: typically 1% to 5% of face value for payroll and government checks, higher for personal checks. Many states cap what licensed check cashers can charge.
- Bank mobile deposit or ATM: usually free with an account, but no immediate access to the full amount.
Government and payroll checks almost always carry lower fees than personal checks, which retailers and apps treat as higher risk. On larger amounts, small percentage fees add up fast. Five percent of a $3,000 check is $150, so it pays to compare before you go.
What You Need to Bring
- A government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, U.S. passport, or state ID), unexpired, with a name that matches the payee line on the check.
- A properly endorsed check. Sign the back in the endorsement area. For mobile deposits, add “For Mobile Deposit Only” underneath. A blank endorsement (just your signature) is the least secure option because anyone who finds the check could try to cash it.
- A check with a legible date and a written amount that matches the numerical amount.
For apps and mobile deposits, you also need a smartphone with a working camera and an active account with the relevant service.
When Your Money Actually Shows Up
Retail stores and check-cashing apps give you same-day access, minus their fee. A bank deposit made on Sunday follows Regulation CC’s availability schedule starting from Monday.1eCFR. 12 CFR 229.2 – Definitions
For most checks, your bank has to make the first $275 available by the end of the next business day after the banking day it was received. For a Sunday deposit, that’s Tuesday. Treasury checks, cashier’s checks, and government checks deposited in person generally must be fully available the next business day.6eCFR. 12 CFR 229.10 – Next-Day Availability
Beyond that initial $275, your bank must make an additional $550 available for cash withdrawal by 5:00 p.m. on the same availability day.7eCFR. 12 CFR 229.12 – Availability Schedule The rest follows a standard schedule that can add a few more business days depending on the check type.
Watch Out for Bad Checks
Cashing a check that turns out to be fraudulent or drawn on insufficient funds creates real problems even when you had no idea it was bad. A retail store will pursue you for the full amount. A bank will reverse the deposit and deduct the funds, which can overdraw your account. Bounced-check and suspected-fraud history gets reported to specialty consumer reporting agencies like ChexSystems, where negative information can stay for up to seven years and make it hard to open a new checking account.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Why Was I Denied a Checking Account
Before you cash a check from someone you don’t know well, confirm the payer’s identity and look for security features like watermarks and microprinting. If someone asks you to deposit a check and send part of the money back, treat it as a scam.
