Bank net interest margin is net interest income divided by average earning assets, expressed as a percentage. It tells you how many cents a bank keeps on every dollar of interest-earning assets after paying for the deposits and borrowings that fund them. For the full year 2025, FDIC-insured institutions reported an aggregate NIM of 3.30%, with the fourth quarter at 3.39%, the highest quarterly figure since early 2019.1FDIC. The Formula

Net interest income (NII) is the numerator: total interest received minus total interest paid during the reporting period. A bank that collects $400 million in interest on loans and securities and pays $150 million to depositors and creditors has $250 million of NII.
Average earning assets sit in the denominator. These are the balance-sheet items held to generate interest: loans, investment securities, interest-bearing deposits at other banks, and federal funds sold. Using an average over the period, rather than a single day’s snapshot, smooths quarter-end spikes and seasonal swings.
Run the numbers: if that same bank’s average earning assets total $7.14 billion, its NIM is roughly 3.50% ($250 million ÷ $7.14 billion). The bank netted $3.50 on every $100 of earning assets.2DataBank – World Bank. Bank Net Interest Margin – Glossary
One trap worth avoiding: NII is a dollar amount and can rise simply because the balance sheet is growing, even while NIM shrinks. A bank that doubles its assets but barely improves its spread will show higher NII and lower NIM. Both figures matter, but NIM isolates efficiency.
What Feeds Interest Income and Interest Expense
Interest income comes from every asset that earns a return. For most commercial banks, the biggest slice is loans: commercial and industrial credit, commercial real estate, residential mortgages, auto loans, and credit cards. Loan portfolios usually carry the highest yields because borrowers pay a premium for credit risk. The investment portfolio comes next: Treasuries, agency mortgage-backed securities, and municipal bonds. These earn less but are easier to sell when the bank needs cash.
Interest expense covers everything the bank pays to fund itself. The largest piece for most banks is interest on customer deposits, including savings accounts, money market accounts, and certificates of deposit. Non-interest-bearing checking accounts are essentially free funding, which is why analysts watch closely how much of a bank’s deposit base costs nothing to keep.
Beyond deposits, banks tap wholesale funding when they need more liquidity. That includes Federal Home Loan Bank advances, repurchase agreements, and borrowings from the Federal Reserve’s discount window.3Yale School of Management. A bank leaning on FHLB advances and brokered CDs carries a heavier interest expense burden than one funded by sticky consumer checking and savings.
The Tax-Equivalent Adjustment
Interest earned on municipal bonds is exempt from federal income tax, which distorts NIM comparisons. A bank with a large muni portfolio reports lower gross interest income than it effectively earns pre-tax, making its NIM look thinner than a peer holding only fully taxable assets.
Regulators fix this by grossing up tax-exempt income. Divide it by one minus the corporate tax rate. At the current 21% federal rate, $1 million in municipal bond interest becomes about $1.27 million on a tax-equivalent basis ($1,000,000 ÷ 0.79).4FDIC. NIM in regulatory analyses and the FDIC’s Uniform Bank Performance Report is often reported on a tax-equivalent basis. If you’re comparing banks yourself, check whether the figures include this adjustment. The gap can be meaningful for banks with sizeable muni holdings.
What Moves NIM
Rates and the Shape of the Yield Curve
Federal Reserve policy is the largest external force on bank margins. When the Fed raises its target, both loan yields and deposit costs rise, but the net effect on NIM depends on which side reprices faster and by how much.5Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. The slope of the yield curve matters as much as the level. Banks typically fund short and lend long. A steep curve widens the natural spread between what they pay for funding and what they charge for credit. A flat or inverted curve compresses it.
Asset Sensitivity vs. Liability Sensitivity
Balance-sheet structure decides which direction NIM moves with rates. An asset-sensitive bank has more assets repricing in a given window than liabilities. A liability-sensitive bank has the opposite profile: liabilities reprice faster, so rising rates squeeze it. Most U.S. commercial banks run at least modestly asset-sensitive, but the degree varies. Deposit Betas
A deposit beta measures how much of a change in the fed funds rate a bank actually passes to its depositors. A 40% beta means the bank raises deposit rates by 40 basis points for every 100-basis-point Fed hike.7Liberty Street Economics – Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Deposit Betas: Up, Up, and Away? Low betas are the engine behind NIM expansion in rising-rate cycles. Banks with big bases of non-interest-bearing checking or sticky consumer savings hold betas down because those depositors are slower to shop around. Banks funded by brokered CDs or institutional money market accounts see funding costs track the Fed almost in lockstep. Betas also drift higher as a hiking cycle matures and depositors wake up to better yields elsewhere, which is why NIM expansion often peaks before the Fed stops raising rates.
Asset Mix and Funding Strategy
Management choices matter as much as the rate environment. Shifting out of low-yielding government securities into commercial real estate or C&I loans raises the average yield on earning assets. The trade-off is more credit risk, which surfaces later if borrowers default. On the funding side, a franchise that pulls in large volumes of non-interest-bearing deposits enjoys a permanent cost-of-funds advantage over a competitor filling the same funding need with FHLB advances or brokered deposits.
The Credit-Risk Trade-Off
Higher-risk borrowers pay higher rates, which lifts interest income and widens NIM. This is where the metric misleads if read alone. A bank reporting a NIM well above peers may simply be underwriting riskier loans. That looks strong until a downturn arrives and charge-offs spike. Loan losses are recorded below the NIM line, in the provision for credit losses, so they don’t reduce NIM directly. They do wreck the profitability that a strong NIM was supposed to signal. A wide margin funded by shaky loans is a warning, not a badge.
Reading NIM in Context
Size Matters
Community banks consistently report higher NIMs than large banks. That looks backward at first, since big banks have scale advantages and cheaper wholesale funding. The explanation is on the asset side: small banks build relationships with borrowers who have fewer financing options and pay higher rates for access.8Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Large banks also hold proportionally more trading assets and low-yielding liquid securities, which drag down average asset yields.9Federal Reserve System. Trend Beats Snapshot
The direction of NIM over several quarters usually says more than a single reading. Expansion means loans are repricing higher faster than depositors are demanding raises, or that the bank has shifted into higher-yielding assets. Compression is the reverse: funding costs rising faster than asset yields, a common late-cycle pattern once deposit betas catch up, or competition forcing the bank to pay up for funding and accept thinner loan spreads.
Pair It With Efficiency and ROAA
NIM ignores noninterest income like fees and wealth management, and it excludes operating costs like salaries and technology.10Richmond Fed. Do Net Interest Margins and Interest Rates Move Together? A bank can have a strong NIM but be so weighed down by overhead that little of that spread reaches the bottom line. Analysts pair NIM with the efficiency ratio, which measures operating expense per dollar of revenue. A wide NIM paired with a high efficiency ratio means the margin is being consumed by costs.
Return on average assets (ROAA) adds another layer, capturing interest and noninterest income, all expenses, and loan losses. Two banks with identical NIMs can look very different once provision expense, fee income, and operating costs are folded in. If a high-NIM bank also shows a below-average ROAA, the premium it earns on its assets is getting wiped out somewhere below the NIM line.
